History of Music Magazines

From doing this task I have learnt a lot about how magazines have developed and progressed over time. I have looked at many different types of magazine and some of the reasons that they have changed. This is due to the style of music in this era and also the culture of the people reading the magazines. This means that the magazines will often follow trends and patterns that are in society at any one time.

·         How many music magazines are on sale?

There are about 10 different brands of music magazine on sale.

·         How many different genres of magazines are on sale?

There are many different genres of music magazines that are available in the shop. The genres range from classical, and pop to rock and metal music magazines.

·         What is the positioning of the music magazines in the store?

The music magazines are positioned in the same place as the newspapers in a shop. They are positioned so that you will notice them while you are waiting to pay for the items that you are going to buy.  

·         Which magazines are at the front of the stand and at the back?

The most popular magazines such as NME, Kerrang and Q are all positioned at the front of the magazine stand. This is understandable because the shop will want to sell as many copies as possible and by putting the most popular copies at the front they will therefor sell more of them. The less popular magazines such as Vibe, Rocksound and mojo where towards the back of the stand however they were still visible.   

·         What part of the magazine are on show the most and which part is shown the least?

The mastheads of the magazine are shown a lot as well as the artist who is on the cover of the magazine. The part of the magazine that is on show the least is obviously on the back of the magazine and sometimes the bottom third of the front cover.

·         How clear is the name of the magazine? Is the price clear?

The name of the magazine is very clear this is because of the bold and clear masthead which is at the top of the page. The price is not clear at all. It is shown in small text in the bottom right of the page. It could not be seen from photos and you have to look very closely to find out what the price of the magazine is.

In this slideshow you can see the detailed description of the features of the magazine that i looked at. I chose to analyse the front cover, the contents page and a double page spread from the magazine. To compete the slideshow I used the website PhotoPeach. It was very simple and effective to use. It as helped to present the photos of my analysis in a way which is easy to read and is interesting to watch. 

Institutional Video

From making this video I have learnt how the different institutions work and how they run the music magazines. I also found out all the relevant information about the circulation of the magazines and how successful they are. I also looked at the price of each music magazine and how they compared with each other. 

Institutional Research

Through Research the Music Magazine Research I have found out all of the relevant information for this task. I have learnt some valuable skills about finding information that is not easily available. I found out that some of the larger institutions own more than one magazine and are competing with each other. 

Music Magazine Front Cover Analysis

From this task I have learnt about the set-up and layout of magazine pages. I have been able to analyse the front covers and look at all the different aspects of the page and why they have been used. As a result of this analysis I will be able to take some of the aspects and take them forward when I begin to design my magazine. Another thing that I learnt about is that the clothes that the artist is wearing in the photo is always representing the genre of music that the magazine covers.

From this research i have learnt that the magazine cover and contents page should look professional and tidy. This is done by having consistent colour schemes. The photos used should be relevant and text explaining them.
